Clients

Most clients in prison are men. The educational background of many clients is poor due to previous adaptation difficulties. Many lack vocational training and have no ties to the labour market.

A high percentage of clients have severe drug problems and many have injected narcotics.

Women

Approximately 5 per cent of inmates are women. Women in prison often have a different background compared with men and they face different problems. They are therefore placed in female prisons. Many women have drug-related problems and are often physically and mentally run down.

Their most common crime are narcotics offences, violence and theft. Many have children and feel guilty for letting them down.

Young offenders

Very few young offenders (under the age of 18) enter prison.
